Peter and Paul Fortress – duration 2 hours
Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, St. Peter and Paul Fortress is considered to be a unique fortification monument of XVIII-XIX centuries. The focal point of its architectural ensemble is St. Peter and Paul Cathedral where the tombs of all the Russian emperors can be found. According to the legend Peter I himself chose a special place for the new fortress: small Zayachy island, situated in the estuary of the Neva river.
During the tour you will visit the territory of the Fortress, Peter and Paul Cathedral – one of the oldest temples of the city and burial place of Russian emperors and their families, including the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II, the political prison “Trubetskoy Bastion” which has so much historical importance as many prominent figures of Russian culture were held there including famous writer Dostoevsky.
